Department History:

In the 1980's the Small Claims and County Civil Division employed 2 workers. There are currently 9 employees. In May of 1999, the Small Claims office moved to the St. Lucie West Annex in Port St Lucie. All court files are maintained at the Port St Lucie Office. Complaints and pleadings are accepted for filing in the Fort Pierce Office but are sent by courier to the Port St Lucie location. Our division has one full time and one part time county judge. Generally hearings are held everyday of the week. On average the department files over 8,000 new cases per year.

Department Functions and Services:

SMALL CLAIMS DIVISION:
The Small Claims Court hears all cases at law in which the demand or value of the property does not exceed $5000.00, exclusive of costs, interest and attorney's fees. The St. Lucie County Small Claims court uses a two hearing procedure: a pretrial conference (with mediation) and a final hearing (if settlement cannot be reached at the pretrial conference).

COUNTY CIVIL DIVISION:
The County Civil Division handles all cases in excess of $5000.00 but less than $15,000.00, exclusive of costs, interest and attorneys fees which include evictions and foreclosure cases. The Clerks' Office supplies only basic eviction complaint forms. All other complaints for county court must be prepared by the party or by an attorney.
